FE Mechanical Handbook 10.6 Page Guide
Mechanical lookups are dominated by tables rather than formulas — steam properties, Moody friction factors, fatigue curves. Knowing which table a problem needs, and where it sits, matters more here than in any other FE discipline. The table below pairs each topic with the pages that hold its tables.
FE Mechanical is front-loaded with thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, and those three sections (pp. 149-230) sit back-to-back in the handbook. The slow trap is jumping to Mechanical Engineering (pp. 442-472) for an energy problem when the governing relation is in the thermal-sciences block. Decide whether a problem is a property lookup or a design calculation before you start searching.

Sections People Waste Time On
- Searching the Mechanical Engineering section for thermo, fluids, or heat transfer formulas that live earlier in the handbook.
- Searching broad words like "energy" or "power" instead of cycle, component, pump, fan, or shaft terms.
- Jumping into steam-table or psychrometric lookups before naming the process and known properties.
- Reading formulas passively instead of solving with the handbook open and recording the search terms that worked.
First-Week Lookup Drill
- Time yourself finding the saturated steam table. Mechanical examinees open it more than any other page, and seconds saved there compound across the exam.
- Locate the Moody diagram twice: once from Fluid Mechanics, once by searching “friction factor”. Use whichever route is faster for you.
- Find the fatigue and stress-concentration curves in Mechanical Design. They are easy to scroll past and awkward to search for by name.
- Search with short terms from this guide, such as "Machine Design", "Calculus", "Material Properties", "Integral", "Normal Distribution", "Time Value of Money". Property tables respond better to the substance name than to the topic; try “steam” before “thermodynamics”.
- For a combined thermo-and-fluids problem, decide which property table you need before opening anything — that single decision usually determines how long the question takes.
