Before buying any prep book, get a copy of the NCEES FE Reference Handbook. This is the exact document you will have access to on-screen during the exam as a searchable PDF. Every formula, table, and chart the exam writers expect you to use comes from this handbook.

Here is why handbook practice matters: the exam reference is on-screen, and speed depends on knowing the right section names, formula context, units, and search terms before test day. If you have never practiced navigating the handbook, you will waste precious minutes hunting for formulas on exam day.

Use the official digital handbook alongside every practice problem you solve during your study period. A printed copy can be helpful for notes away from the test center, but the goal is to know where every key formula lives in the on-screen reference workflow.

Why Should You Buy the NCEES FE Practice Exam?

The NCEES FE Practice Exam is written by the same organization that writes your actual exam. No other practice test can make that claim. It is available for each FE discipline (Civil, Electrical & Computer, Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, Industrial & Systems, and Other Disciplines) for $50 each.

This is the single best diagnostic tool available. Take it under timed conditions as one of your two or three full simulations, ideally 1 to 2 weeks before your exam date. Your score will give you a realistic picture of where you stand and which topics need more work.

What it does well: Realistic difficulty, official question style, accurate topic distribution.

Limitation: You only get one exam per purchase (110 questions). Once you have seen the questions, you cannot use it again as a fresh diagnostic. This is where a practice app with a large question bank becomes valuable for ongoing drilling.

Is the Lindeburg FE Review Manual Worth It?

Not the general edition. Michael R. Lindeburg's FE Review Manual, 3rd edition, came out in October 2010, when the FE was a paper exam with a shared morning session. Since 2014 each discipline has had its own computer-based exam, and NCEES revised the FE specifications in July 2020, so the general manual no longer follows your exam's topic list or the current handbook.

It still explains the shared fundamentals well, from mathematics and statics to engineering economics. If you already own it, use it as a concept refresher, but do not buy it as your main review book.

Buy instead: Lindeburg's review for your discipline, covered in the next section. It keeps the same teaching style, with clear explanations, worked examples and practice problems with full solutions, and follows one exam's topic list.

Do You Need a Discipline-Specific Review Book?

Yes, if one exists for your exam. A discipline review goes deeper on the topics your exam tests, and Lindeburg has written reviews for the three largest FE disciplines. Each first came out before the July 2020 specification update, so check your copy's printing date and compare its chapters with the current NCEES topic list for your exam:

• FE Civil Review — Covers structural analysis, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental, construction, and surveying. The FE Civil exam is the most popular FE discipline. First published in 2017.
• FE Mechanical Review Manual — Covers thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, dynamics, and materials. First published in 2014.
• FE Electrical and Computer Review Manual — Covers circuits, electronics, signal processing, power, computer systems, and electromagnetics. First published in 2015.

Best for: Anyone taking the Civil, Mechanical or Electrical and Computer exam. For the other FE disciplines, look for a current discipline review in PPI's catalog, and lean on the NCEES practice exam and the handbook.
